Path Traversal occurrences in Apex One
A security agent directory traversal vulnerability in Trend Micro Apex One and Apex One as a Service could allow a local attacker to escalate privileges on affected installations. Please note: an attacker must first obtain the ability to execute low-privileged code on the target system in order to exploit this vulnerability. (2022-12-12, CVE-2022-44653)
A directory traversal vulnerability in Trend Micro Apex One, OfficeScan (11.0, XG) and Worry-Free Business Security (9.5, 10.0) may allow an attacker to bypass authentication and log on to an affected product's management console as a root user. The vulnerability does not require authentication. (2019-10-28, CVE-2019-18189)
Why Path Traversal can be dangerous
Relative Path Confusion means that your web server is configured to serve responses to ambiguous URLs. This configuration can possibly cause confusion about the correct relative path for the URL. It is also an issue of resources, such as images, styles etc., which are specified in the response using relative path, not the absolute URL.
If the web browser permits to parse "cross-content" response, the attacker may be able to fool the web browser into interpreting HTML into other content types, which can then lead to a cross site scripting attack (link do XSS).
