Cross-site Scripting occurrences in Enterprise Linux Workstation

A flaw was found in c-ares library, where a missing input validation check of host names returned by DNS (Domain Name Servers) can lead to output of wrong hostnames which might potentially lead to Domain Hijacking. The highest threat from this vulnerability is to confidentiality and integrity as well as system availability. (2021-11-23, CVE-2021-3672)

Insufficient policy enforcement in extensions in Google Chrome prior to 80.0.3987.87 allowed an attacker who convinced a user to install a malicious extension to bypass navigation restrictions via a crafted Chrome Extension. (2020-02-11, CVE-2020-6392)

Insufficient validation of untrusted input in Blink in Google Chrome prior to 80.0.3987.87 allowed a local attacker to bypass content security policy via a crafted HTML page. (2020-02-11, CVE-2020-6391)

When pasting a <style> tag from the clipboard into a rich text editor, the CSS sanitizer does not escape < and > characters. Because the resulting string is pasted directly into the text node of the element this does not result in a direct injection into the webpage; however, if a webpage subsequently copies the node's innerHTML, assigning it to another innerHTML, this would result in an XSS vulnerability. Two WYSIWYG editors were identified with this behavior, more may exist. This vulnerability affects Firefox ESR < 68.4 and Firefox < 72. (2020-01-08, CVE-2019-17022)

When pasting a <style> tag from the clipboard into a rich text editor, the CSS sanitizer incorrectly rewrites a @namespace rule. This could allow for injection into certain types of websites resulting in data exfiltration. This vulnerability affects Firefox ESR < 68.4 and Firefox < 72. (2020-01-08, CVE-2019-17016)

A missing case for handling special schemes in permission request checks in Extensions in Google Chrome prior to 72.0.3626.81 allowed an attacker who convinced a user to install a malicious extension to bypass extension permission checks for privileged pages via a crafted Chrome Extension. (2019-02-19, CVE-2019-5778)

The default selected dialog button in CustomHandlers in Google Chrome prior to 69.0.3497.81 allowed a remote attacker who convinced the user to perform certain operations to open external programs via a crafted HTML page. (2019-01-09, CVE-2018-16084)

Lack of CSP enforcement on WebUI pages in Bink in Google Chrome prior to 65.0.3325.146 allowed an attacker who convinced a user to install a malicious extension to bypass content security policy via a crafted Chrome Extension. (2018-11-14, CVE-2018-6070)

XSS Auditor in Google Chrome prior to 64.0.3282.119, did not ensure the reporting URL was in the same origin as the page it was on, which allowed a remote attacker to obtain referrer details via a crafted HTML page. (2018-09-25, CVE-2018-6051)

Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the web UI in Mailman before 2.1.26 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a user-options URL. (2018-01-23, CVE-2018-5950)

Why Cross-site Scripting can be dangerous

Cross site scripting is an attack where a web page executes code that is injected by an adversary. It usually appears, when users input is presented. This attack can be used to impersonate a user, take over control of the session, or even steal API keys.

The attack can be executed e.g. when you application injects the request parameter directly into the HTML code of the page returned to the user:

https://server.com/confirmation?message=Transaction+Complete

what results in:

<span>Confirmation: Transaction Complete</span>

In that case the message can be modified to become a valid Javascript code, e.g.:

https://server.com/confirmation?message=<script>dangerous javascript code here</script>

and it will be executed locally by the user's browser with full access to the user's personal application/browser data:

<span>Confirmation: <script>dangerous javascript code here</script></span>
