Cross-site Scripting occurrences in Gitea

Cross-site Scripting (XSS) - Stored in GitHub repository go-gitea/gitea prior to 1.16.9. (2022-05-29, CVE-2022-1928)

Cross Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in Gitea before 1.5.1 via the repository settings inside the external wiki/issue tracker URL field. (2022-02-08, CVE-2021-45329)

Gitea 1.12.x and 1.13.x before 1.13.4 allows XSS via certain issue data in some situations. (2021-03-15, CVE-2021-28378)

Gitea 1.7.0 and earlier is affected by: Cross Site Scripting (XSS). The impact is: Attacker is able to have victim execute arbitrary JS in browser. The component is: go-get URL generation - PR to fix: https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/pull/5905. The attack vector is: victim must open a specifically crafted URL. The fixed version is: 1.7.1 and later. (2019-07-18, CVE-2019-1010261)

Gitea 1.7.2, 1.7.3 is affected by: Cross Site Scripting (XSS). The impact is: execute JavaScript in victim's browser, when the vulnerable repo page is loaded. The component is: repository's description. The attack vector is: victim must navigate to public and affected repo page. (2019-07-11, CVE-2019-1010314)

Why Cross-site Scripting can be dangerous

Cross site scripting is an attack where a web page executes code that is injected by an adversary. It usually appears, when users input is presented. This attack can be used to impersonate a user, take over control of the session, or even steal API keys.

The attack can be executed e.g. when you application injects the request parameter directly into the HTML code of the page returned to the user:

https://server.com/confirmation?message=Transaction+Complete

what results in:

In that case the message can be modified to become a valid Javascript code, e.g.:

https://server.com/confirmation?message=<script>dangerous javascript code here</script>

and it will be executed locally by the user's browser with full access to the user's personal application/browser data:
