Cross-site Scripting occurrences in Pan-os

A reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Palo Alto Network PAN-OS web interface enables an authenticated network-based attacker to mislead another authenticated PAN-OS administrator to click on a specially crafted link that performs arbitrary actions in the PAN-OS web interface as the targeted authenticated administrator. This issue impacts: PAN-OS 8.1 versions earlier than 8.1.20; PAN-OS 9.0 versions earlier than 9.0.14; PAN-OS 9.1 versions earlier than 9.1.10; PAN-OS 10.0 versions earlier than 10.0.2. This issue does not affect Prisma Access. (2021-09-08, CVE-2021-3052)

A reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in the PAN-OS management web interface. A remote attacker able to convince an administrator with an active authenticated session on the firewall management interface to click on a crafted link to that management web interface could potentially execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the administrator's browser and perform administrative actions. This issue impacts: PAN-OS 8.1 versions earlier than PAN-OS 8.1.16; PAN-OS 9.0 versions earlier than PAN-OS 9.0.9. (2020-09-09, CVE-2020-2036)

A cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists when visiting malicious websites with the Palo Alto Networks GlobalProtect Clientless VPN that can compromise the user's active session. This issue affects: PAN-OS 7.1 versions earlier than 7.1.26; PAN-OS 8.1 versions earlier than 8.1.13; PAN-OS 9.0 versions earlier than 9.0.7; All versions of PAN-OS 8.0. (2020-05-13, CVE-2020-2005)

A DOM-Based Cross Site Scripting Vulnerability exists in PAN-OS and Panorama Management Web Interfaces. A remote attacker able to convince an authenticated administrator to click on a crafted link to PAN-OS and Panorama Web Interfaces could execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the administrator's browser and perform administrative actions. This issue affects: PAN-OS 7.1 versions earlier than 7.1.26; PAN-OS 8.1 versions earlier than 8.1.13; PAN-OS 9.0 versions earlier than 9.0.6; All versions of PAN-OS 8.0. (2020-05-13, CVE-2020-2017)

The PAN-OS external dynamics lists in PAN-OS 7.1.21 and earlier, PAN-OS 8.0.14 and earlier, and PAN-OS 8.1.5 and earlier, may allow an attacker that is authenticated in Next Generation Firewall with write privileges to External Dynamic List configuration to inject arbitrary JavaScript or HTML. (2019-01-30, CVE-2019-1565)

The PAN-OS management web interface in PAN-OS 7.1.21 and earlier, PAN-OS 8.0.14 and earlier, and PAN-OS 8.1.5 and earlier, may allow an unauthenticated attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript or HTML. (2019-01-30, CVE-2019-1566)

GlobalProtect Portal Login page in Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS before 8.1.4 allows an unauthenticated attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript or HTML. (2018-10-12, CVE-2018-10141)

The PAN-OS response for GlobalProtect Gateway in Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS 6.1.21 and earlier, PAN-OS 7.1.18 and earlier, PAN-OS 8.0.11 and earlier may allow an unauthenticated attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript or HTML. PAN-OS 8.1 is NOT affected. (2018-08-16, CVE-2018-10139)

The PAN-OS session browser in PAN-OS 6.1.20 and earlier, PAN-OS 7.1.16 and earlier, PAN-OS 8.0.9 and earlier, and PAN-OS 8.1.1 and earlier may allow an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript or HTML. (2018-07-03, CVE-2018-9335)

The PAN-OS web interface administration page in PAN-OS 6.1.20 and earlier, PAN-OS 7.1.17 and earlier, PAN-OS 8.0.10 and earlier, and PAN-OS 8.1.1 and earlier may allow an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript or HTML. (2018-07-03, CVE-2018-9337)

The URL filtering "continue page" hosted by PAN-OS 8.0.10 and earlier may allow an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript or HTML via specially crafted URLs. (2018-07-03, CVE-2018-7636)

Why Cross-site Scripting can be dangerous

Cross site scripting is an attack where a web page executes code that is injected by an adversary. It usually appears, when users input is presented. This attack can be used to impersonate a user, take over control of the session, or even steal API keys.

The attack can be executed e.g. when you application injects the request parameter directly into the HTML code of the page returned to the user:

https://server.com/confirmation?message=Transaction+Complete

what results in:

<span>Confirmation: Transaction Complete</span>

In that case the message can be modified to become a valid Javascript code, e.g.:

https://server.com/confirmation?message=<script>dangerous javascript code here</script>

and it will be executed locally by the user's browser with full access to the user's personal application/browser data:

<span>Confirmation: <script>dangerous javascript code here</script></span>
