Traveler Cross-site Scripting

There is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability in the HCL Traveler web admin (LotusTraveler.nsf). (2022-09-15, CVE-2022-27561)

HCL Traveler is vulnerable to a cross-site scripting (XSS) caused by improper validation of the Name parameter for Approved Applications in the Traveler administration web pages. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute a malicious script to access any cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive information retained by the browser and used with that site. (2022-06-01, CVE-2021-27778)

HCL Traveler versions 9.x and earlier are susceptible to cross-site scripting attacks. On the Problem Report page of the Traveler servlet pages, there is a field to specify a file attachment to provide additional problem details. An invalid file name returns an error message that includes the entered file name. If the file name is not escaped in the returned error page, it could expose a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. (2019-10-18, CVE-2019-4409)

Cross site scripting is an attack where a web page executes code that is injected by an adversary. It usually appears, when users input is presented. This attack can be used to impersonate a user, take over control of the session, or even steal API keys.

The attack can be executed e.g. when you application injects the request parameter directly into the HTML code of the page returned to the user:

what results in:

In that case the message can be modified to become a valid Javascript code, e.g.:

https://server.com/confirmation?message=<script>dangerous javascript code here</script>

and it will be executed locally by the user's browser with full access to the user's personal application/browser data:
