Cross-site Scripting occurrences in Vtiger Crm
Vtiger CRM v7.4.0 was discovered to contain a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability via the e-mail template modules. (2022-09-27, CVE-2022-38335)
Reflected XSS in Vtiger CRM v7.2.0 in vtigercrm/index.php? through the view parameter can result in an attacker performing malicious actions to users who open a maliciously crafted link or third-party web page. (2021-01-20, CVE-2020-19362)
vtiger CRM 7.0.1 is affected by one reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting version 7.0.1 and probably prior versions. This vulnerability could allow remote unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via index.php?module=Contacts&view=List (app parameter). (2019-06-06, CVE-2018-8047)
Why Cross-site Scripting can be dangerous
Cross site scripting is an attack where a web page executes code that is injected by an adversary. It usually appears, when users input is presented. This attack can be used to impersonate a user, take over control of the session, or even steal API keys.
The attack can be executed e.g. when you application injects the request parameter directly into the HTML code of the page returned to the user:
https://server.com/confirmation?message=Transaction+Complete
what results in:

In that case the message can be modified to become a valid Javascript code, e.g.:
https://server.com/confirmation?message=<script>dangerous javascript code here</script>
and it will be executed locally by the user's browser with full access to the user's personal application/browser data:
